When we began developing BECKS, we set out to create an authentic character portrait that could build a fictional narrative around a real person. Initially conceived after witnessing singer/songwriter Alyssa Robbins perform in a small St. Louis diner, BECKS took on life as we began to discuss how such performances could serve as a storytelling device by incorporating Alyssa's music into a drama inspired by her life.

It was important to us that the film be written with extreme authenticity in mind, and much of BECKS was developed by conducting in-depth interviews with Alyssa so thatwe could craft the characters to be realistic and complex. The script continued to evolve through rigorous rehearsals with the cast, where they weighed in on their characters' motivations and dynamics. We wanted each actor to feel justified in the decisions their character made in service to the story.

The process of developing the script was concurrent with developing the music, where we paired veteran music producer Steve Salett with Alyssa to mold and further develop her pre-existing tracks to better serve the film. They also worked together to write some original songs, and thefilm's soundtrack is a result of that fruitful collaboration.

Making use of Lena Hall's stage pedigree and extraordinary voice, all but two of the songs in BECKS were sung live-to-camera rather than performed to a track. And even though our film had an extremely modest budget, we were fortunate to assemble an experienced crew and talented cast that helped us achieve miracles in spite of limited resources.

While we are incredibly proud to call BECKS a lesbian film, we aspired to make a movie that speaks to the broader human experiences of love, heartbreak, and finding one's place in this world. We hope that viewers enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.
