God's Own Country
God's Own Country
Opening Night Gala
(United Kingdom, 2017, 104 min)
Directed By: Francis Lee
Gritty yet tender, desolate yet beautiful, carnal yet romantic: God’s Own Country is a masterpiece directed with powerful focus and authenticity by first-time feature filmmaker Francis Lee. Johnny Saxby (Josh O’Connor) is an overworked 25-year-old sheep farmer who feels as though life has already passed him by. He whiles away the time with drunken hookups in his small community in Northern England. When his ailing father takes a turn for the worse, handsome Romanian migrant Gheorghe (Alec Secareanu) is brought in to assist Johnny. Although Johnny resents Gheorghe at first, the two are quickly drawn to each other, and during an excursion to the highlands, they forge an even deeper connection.
Lauded by critics and audiences alike at Sundance—where it received the World Cinema Directing Award for its beautiful depiction of the English countryside—this assured new milestone marks a bold new epoch in LGBTQ storytelling and is an unflinching and compassionate plea for unity in these divisive times.

From the sexy and destructive deities of American Gods, through the exquisite corpses of Hannibal and the candy-colored fantasy of Pushing Daisies, to the droll women who hang out between this world and the next on Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me, the TV shows of Bryan Fuller do not look like anyone else’s. And his fascinating characters, particularly the LGBTQ ones, do not behave in the often-rigid ways to which we have become accustomed on the small screen. From his early days writing for the Star Trek franchise, through fascinating one-offs like The Amazing Screw-On Head, High Moon, and Mockingbird Lane, to his string of envelope-pushing and category-defying series, Fuler has established himself as a true original in the medium. He takes a compassionate view of the human condition but never shies away from life’s darker corners, balancing horror with his trademart wit and whimsy. Fuller’s visionary storytelling and seemingly endless imagination have helped turn television into a more exciting place, and certainly a more diverse one.
It doesn't take an anniversary year to know that Outfest Los Angeles' Opening Night Gala has been the best party of the summer for decades. The VIP Pre-Party is the see-and-be-seen event where attendees rub shoulders with festival filmmkaers and celebrities. Shannon Swindle, James Beard semifinalist Pastry Chef at Tom Collichio's Craft, has asked some of his friends from the top restaurants in the city to join him to give you a taste of the best LA has to offer. Inside the theater it begins with the presentation of the Achievement Award followed by the Opening Night movie. The night does not end there. Outside and under the stars grab a bite from one of the dozen restaurants and a glass of beer from Angel City Brewery or a Finlandia vodka cocktail. It's all on us! The music will get your hips swaying while the magic of the night will have you meeting new friends and creating memories to last another 35 years.
