Based on the sensational true story, PARTY MONSTER is a riveting, colorful tale of the rise and fall of superstar Club Kid Michael Alig (Macaulay Culkin) and his best friend James St. James (Seth Green). Set in the early-’80s post-Warhol downtown Manhattan club scene, PARTY MONSTER captures the adrenaline rush of Club Kid culture - outrageous costumes, over-the-top drug use and electrifying glam-pop dance music. PARTY MONSTER opens with St. James recalling his crowd’s most notorious moment, the horrorshow murder of fellow club kid Angel (Wilson Cruz). St. James recounts how he first met Alig, the proverbial smalltown boy who moved to NYC to escape the drearys and the normals and become a superstar. St. James (who does not fail to remind us of his status as the “original Club Kid”) teaches Alig all he needs to know about being glamorous, fabulous and famous. Soon Alig is hosting the most successful parties in town, the darling of New York nightlife and the posterboy for the trendy Club Kids, until his drug addiction sucks him into a downward spiral that culminates in murder.
Accomplished documentary filmmakers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE, 101 RENT BOYS) have made a successful transition into narrative storytelling, bringing elements of their documentary talents to the screen. PARTY MONSTER cleverly employs a variety of voices and styles to create a dynamic, passionate film. Macaulay Culkin creates an Alig who is larger than life, capturing both his magnetism and insecurity, and Seth Green is perfect as the flamboyant, witty St. James. The two leads are supported by a superb cast that includes Chloë Sevigny, Wilmer Valderrama, Natasha Lyonne, Dylan McDermott, Diana Scarwid and a special appearance by Marilyn Manson! --Kirsten Schaffer (Originally shown at Outfest 2003.)
