Mel, a boyish young woman, lives a humdrum existence in Germany but dreams of seeing the world. When she's mistaken as male, she reinvents herself as Miguel, a gentle and romantic Portuguese boy, and charms Jenny, a pretty teen. Romance ensues - until Mel's secret is exposed, forcing her to face the truth. The comparisons to Brandon Teena and BOYS DON'T CRY are obvious, but with a skillful script and fine performances, TO FARO reinvents the past in order to transcend tragedy.
