This lyrical and visually absorbing portrait takes a look at seminal avant-garde composer/singer-songwriter/cellist and disco producer Arthur Russell. The film follows Russell’s journey from his humble beginnings as a precocious teen from Oskaloosa, Iowa, to his immersion in New York City’s underground art scene, to his untimely death from AIDS in 1992.
Russell prolifically created music that spanned both pop and abstract art, from collaborations with Philip Glass and David Byrne to his band The Flying Hearts (with ex-members of The Modern Lovers) to dance floor classics including Larry Levan’s remix of “Is It All Over My Face.” Russell’s work, often thought to be ahead of its time, has become timeless. Fifteen years since his passing, his music is influencing a whole new generation of music lovers and musicians alike. Director Matt Wolf has woven together moving memories from Russell’s surviving boyfriend, parents and collaborators with stunning landscape images to deftly reflect the tortured genius of Arthur Russell. - Ernesto Foronda, Platinum Programmer Screening Schedule
