Backstage
Directed By: Emmanuelle Bercot,
SCR: Emmanuelle Bercot & Jérôme Tonnerre, France, 2005, 35mm, subtitled, 115 min.
A spellbinding and twisted look at celebrity culture, BACKSTAGE presents the story of Lucie, an androgynous provincial teenager obsessed with Lauren, a Debbie Harry-meets-Madonna pop star (played by Emmanuelle Seigner). When a TV show presents an unexpected opportunity for Lucie to meet her idol in person, Lucie freezes, a deer in headlights, and squanders her big moment. Desperate for another chance, Lucie runs away from home to track Lauren down in Paris. Soon Lucie is running errands for Lauren, poking into her private life and spending more time with Lauren than she could have imagined. The two begin to engage in a seductive power play charged with sexual tension and unbridled emotions. Lucies teen fantasy inevitably collides with reality, as the action behind the scenes exposes the grand facade of fame and celebrity. - KY
