Gypo

Directed By: Jan Dunn,
SCR: Jan Dunn, UK, 2005, 98 min.

Set in a British industrial town and told from three different points of view in three episodes, GYPO is a gritty, heartfelt domestic drama. A middle-aged working class couple’s lives are changed when their teenage daughter befriends a young female Czech refugee. Bitter, xenophobic Paul and his wife Helen, who cares for her grandson and works the night shift at a grocery store, lead dreary dead-end lives. When beautiful, sexy Czech Tasha arrives on the scene, she brings compassion, unparalleled companionship and optimism into Helen’s beleaguered existence. As the first Dogme 95 film from Britain, GYPO adheres to the film movement’s anti-Hollywood credo. Shot with handheld DV cameras and no-frills technology (no special lighting or effects), GYPO’s stunning performances and powerful storytelling take center stage. - KY
