Colma: The Musical
Directed By: Richard Wong,
SCR: H.P. Mendoza, USA, 2006, video, 113 min.
With colorful, wildly original and heartfelt songs this impressive, boisterous and entertaining musical blasts through the coming- of-age genre. What better way to work through summer-after-high-school growing pains than singing and dancing? Recent grads Billy, Rodel and Maribel have no intention of sticking around Colma, where there are more graveyards than front yards. Although they are all best friends, tensions - sexual and otherwise - flare when Billy begins to date a new girl and Rodel and Maribel must compete for his attention. As in life, not all questions can be answered by summers end, but not to worry - with plenty of irreverent humor and sassy performances from its appealing cast the summer passes by a little less painfully. Wong and Mendoza (who also plays Rodel) have crafted an impressive, boisterous and entertaining musical rivaling any offered on a Broadway stage. - MA
