The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros (Ang Pagdadalaga Ni Maximo Oliveros)
Directed By: Auraeus Solito,
SCR: Michiko Yamamoto, Philippines, 2005, 35mm, subtitled, 100 min.
This portrait of the gritty slums of Manila is blown wide open by the remarkable character at its center, an openly gay, prepubescent boy named Maximo. In a joyous, fearless performance by Nathan Lopez, precocious Maxi holds his family of petty thieves together while leading a circle of other local gay boys. Fully accepted by his family and neighbors, he cooks and cleans for his father and older brothers and leads a delightful life in the hardscrabble community, watching romance movies and dressing up to mimic the extravagance of beauty pageant contestants. Maxi develops a crush on the handsome, incorruptible new neighborhood cop who is determined to snare Maxi’s criminal family in his net. As the crucial relationships in the child’s life lead to inevitable conflict, THE BLOSSOMING OF MAXIMO OLIVEROS becomes increasingly rich in detail and emotionally complex. Winner of the Teddy Award for Best LGBT Film at the 2006 Berlin Film Festival, Auraeus Solito’s strikingly accomplished debut is a gay boy’s coming-of-age as we’ve never seen it before. - SWG
