An established part of contemporary cultural discourse, with as much intellectual oomph as that thing in Utah.
Outfest provides an unusual level of access to the minds and ears of some of the most influential filmmakers and writers working.

- Los Angeles Times

The whole basis of my career comes from this festival.
- Gus Van Sant

For 25 years, Outfest has screened more than 4,200 international films and videos for audiences of well over half a million people. Each year we showcase over 200 features and shorts films in ten venues to audiences of more than 45,000 people. Great opportunities await filmmakers at Outfest:

• Outfest is the only gay and lesbian film festival in the heart of the entertainment industry, and more industry executives attend Outfest than any other gay and lesbian film festival. Our Access LA program offers comprehensive services for emerging filmmakers to forge connections in Hollywood. These services include:

— One-on-one industry meetings with an agent, manager, production company executive, entertainment lawyer or distribution company executive for every director in the festival.
— A five-part HBO Breakfast Series hosted by members of the Outfest Board of Directors, with topics like How to Find Distribution, How to Get Work in Television, How to Get Representation, etc.
— A tape library at the Directors Guild of America accessible to distributors and programmers.
— Three dozen panels, parties and receptions where filmmakers meet other filmmakers as well as representatives from the industry, other festivals and international LGBT media outlets.

• Outfest has the most extensive awards program of any gay and lesbian film festival, bestowing 16 awards for film and video excellence, including the $5,000 HBO Outstanding First Narrative Feature Award.

• Our superb filmmaker hospitality program (accreditation, screening tickets, party invitations, home stay accommodations, etc.) ensures that your time in Los Angeles is both pleasant and productive.

• Our state-of-the-art venues include the festival headquarters at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and screenings at the vast outdoor John Anson Ford Amphitheater, the historic Orpheum movie palace, the LA Gay and Lesbian Center’s Village at Ed Gould Plaza and REDCAT: Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater.

• Outfest receives media coverage from national outlets such as Vanity Fair, CNN, USA Today, E!
Entertainment Television, Access Hollywood, Variety, Entertainment Tonight, The Advocate, OUT, MTV, Hollywood Reporter, Genre and the Independent Film Channel — as well as key local outlets such as the Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, Lesbian News, Frontiers, Edge, XY Magazine, Nightlife, local network news and many others.

FILM/VIDEO SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. Films and videos should be of interest to lesbian, gay, bisexual, intersex and/or transgendered people. We are seeking narrative, documentary, experimental and animated films and videos (both features and shorts).

We are also seeking submissions and/or proposals for multi-media, performance and interactive projects for inclusion in Platinum, the experimental and new media section of the festival. Examples include: sound-video installations, live performances with film/video components or interactive web-based projects. Please fill out relevant information on a Submission Form and submit a one-page proposal, samples of your work (VHS, DVD, photographs and/or URL) and a CV or biography, by mail (not online) to the Outfest office. Due March 3, 2008.

2. Only DVD (Region 1/North America) will be accepted for preview screening. If your final exhibition format is video, do not submit your master to us. We are not responsible for any master materials. Please format in MPEG video using the codec of your choice. Neither QuickTime (.mov) or Microsoft (.avi) files are accepted. Please test consumer-burned DVD on several makes and models of players before sending it to our offices.

3. Preview DVDs must be labeled with the title, running time and contact information (including name, address and phone number). DVDs must be submitted in 5 1/4” by 7 1/2” plastic safe cases. These are the industry standard push-button hub, dark plastic cases (like commercial DVDs, not CDs).

4. If you wish to have your preview DVD returned for any reason after the festival, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with suitable postage along with your submission. (Outfest will retain preview copies of works selected for the festival.)

5. A completed entry form must be included with every submission. If you are submitting more than one entry, please photocopy and complete a separate form for each submission. (If you are submitting online, a paper form is not required, but each film or video requires a separate submission.)

6. Rough cuts and works-in-progress are eligible for submission if an exhibition print or tape will be available by June 20, 2007. Please label the DVD “Rough Cut” and specify what is missing (i.e. temp sound, needs color correction, etc). Please be aware that an updated version of your rough cut MAY NOT be able to be re-screened for submission consideration.

7. By submitting your work to Outfest, you grant to Outfest a nonexclusive license to use an excerpt of your submission tape of up to two minutes in length, for promotional purposes only, including but not limited to internet and television broadcast.

8. Still photos from your work are requested with your submission and are required for all films and videos selected for the festival. Good stills make a difference in film placement and press coverage, particularly for shorts. Even the shortest short can get press coverage or festival prominence with a captivating still. If you email stills to Outfest they must be in TIFF or JPEG format and 300 dpi (dots per inch).

9. You are also encouraged to enclose a synopsis, production credits and press information regarding your film or video.

10. To receive acknowledgment of receipt of your entry, enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope or postcard with your submission.

11. Please do not send submissions in fiber-filled envelopes, as the dust damages tapes and VCRs.
