THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE
DIR: Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey, 1999, USA, 35mm, 79 min.

Of all the visual emblems of the flashy yet angst-ridden 1980s, perhaps none is as indelible as the image of two unmistakable, tear-stained eyes. But as this provocative film proves, it's all too easy to reduce such a powerful image to a cliché or a joke. In their portrait of Tammy Faye Bakker Messner, filmmakers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato -veterans of past OUTFEST programs- dig deeper, offering a fresh perspective on the woman behind the mascara.

THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB
-A romantic comedy
DIR: Greg Berlanti, 2000, USA, 35mm, 110 min.

First-time feature filmmaker Greg Berlanti hits a home run with this buoyant and sexy new picture set in the bustling gay mecca of West Hollywood. Summer is the time both for baseball and for boy-chasing, and a close-knit group of 20-something guys plays both fields with equal vigor.

PUNKS
DIR: Patrik-Ian Polk, 2000, USA, 35mm, 105 min

It is truly exciting when a film manages to break new ground. Patrik-Ian Polk's auspicious debut feature deftly stretches the emerging genre of R&B romantic comedy by infusing its hip-hop and R&B rhythms into a completely black gay world. PUNKS gives us a West Hollywood story that you've never seen before on screen!

AWARDS NIGHT
Sunday, July 16

BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER
Dir: Jamie Babbit, 1999, USA, 35 mm, 85 min.

Jamie Babbit's debut feature is a raucous satire that turns up the volume on the ridiculousness of curing homosexuality. BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER is a swipe at so-called lesbian and gay rehabilitation camps that delivers lots of laughs and a sexy love story to boot.
