PINK NARCISSUS

Dir. Jim Bidgood, 1971, USA, 35mm, 70 min.

We start off the Outfest 25th Anniversary retrospective film series with this legendary erotic art film which played as a midnight screening in the 1985 festival (then called the L.A. International Gay & Lesbian Film/Video Festival and taking place at the Four Star Theater on Wilshire Blvd). Blurring the genre distinctions between the two traditions of gay avant-garde cinema and gay male pornography, PINK NARCISSUS is a dream-like and sensual series of fantasies centering on a handsome man who is alternately taken with his own beauty and jarred by the realities of street life.

Author and journalist Alonso Duralde provides a glimpse into how he crafted the list for his book, 101 MUST-SEE MOVIES FOR GAY MEN. Through images and discussion, Duralde will demonstrate that a movie can be queer without having any specific homosexual content.
