BUT I WAS A GIRL…: THE STORY OF FREIDA BELINFANTE
DIR: Tony Boumans, 1999, Netherlands, video, 69min.
LOVE STORY
DIR: Catrine Clay, 1997, USA, video, 60min,
These two rich and wonderfully archived documentaries excavate lesbian histories from the ashes of the Holocaust. BUT I WAS A GIRL… tells the story of this Jewish lesbian’s escape from death at the hands of the Nazis, and her consequent rise to success as a symphony conductor. Freida was a fighter destined for great things from birth. As a young girl, she dreamed of becoming a musician and soon mastered the cello. She succeeded in conducting a variety of orchestras in Europe and after narrowly escaping the Nazis, Freida moved to Southern California, where she became the first woman conductor ever to have her own chamber orchestra in the United States. A LOVE STORY documents the heart-wrenching story of Lilly Wust and Felice Schrader who were lovers in Weimar Germany. Interviews with Lilly, an Aryan hausfrau, provide insight into her first encounters with Felice, the seduction which led her to fall hopelessly in love with the Jewish 21-year-old, and the horror of learning that the love of her life was a prime candidate for imprisonment in a Nazi concentration camp.

Frustrated by her inability to meet women in her busy professional life, Christine Burton founded Golden Threads, a community organization/social group dedicated to facilitating interaction among older lesbians experiencing the same social frustrations. From these humble beginnings, Golden Threads flourished and developed a solid national and international following, fueled largely by the word of mouth of its loyal members. Director Lucy Winer captures lively, entertaining stories of couples who met at Golden Threads events, singles who are earnestly searching for love, and an endangered history of the struggles of being gay in less accepting times. This documentary is a riveting celebration of women, lesbians, romance and love, and an ode to the one woman who made it all possible.

Now this is a true portrait of ferocity: She has a website, an intense daily workout schedule. She loves to dance and can do the electric slide like a pro. She's the life of any party, and oh yes . . .She's 100!!! Spanning a century, Ruth Ellis' love for women and passion for life is truly inspirational. Director Yvonne Welbon captures the endearing essence of Ruth Ellis, an animated, outspoken African American lesbian whose best advice is to be kind and to live always by the Golden Rule. Ruth C. Ellis is the oldest "out" African-American lesbian in the country and it becomes clear watching her reminisce about her life as a "woman lover" that Ellis is a living link to the past, and her stories are key to understanding the struggles and accomplishments of lesbians throughout the century.

A surefire treat for gay people of all ages, this uplifting documentary details the creative and loving partnership between two accomplished artists, now in their golden age and still going strong! The film introduces us to Bertram Ross, former star dancer for the Martha Graham company, and his partner John Wallowitch, renowned pianist and songwriter of the New York cabaret scene. Though we are generously treated to memorabilia and rare footage from the two men's early careers, much more central to the film is the story of their meeting in later years, and their current life together as a celebrated singing duo, the very picture of urbane sophistication so central to gay identity of the recent past. Grateful students and longtime colleagues alike attest to the couple's artistic integrity and warmth, but the film's most moving testimonials are played out in song, as the two gentlemen pass time at home and in performance, spinning off amusing anecdotes and clever tunes like so many jewels at Tiffany's.

CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE
DIR: Sandra R. Williams, 1997, USA, video, 26 min.
These two documentaries make up an insightful and brutally honest program about the impact of homosexuality on children and adolescents. Through the eyes of seven children, CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE takes a candid look at growing up with a homosexual parent. The documentary provides in-depth interviews with parents and children about the social and psychological impact of being raised in a "non-traditional" family. The Italian documentary THE RIGHT TO BE DIFFERENT reveals the work being done for AGEDO, the Italian association of parents and friends of homosexuals. The film brings together gay and straight students from three state high schools to discuss some of the issues involved with growing up in a highly prejudiced society. Given absolute freedom to speak their mind, these students clear the air with refreshing honesty about the issues that unite and divide them.
