Ernesto Foronda's award-winning A LETTER FOR LISA is a moving tribute to Lisa, his cousin. Her death inspires an elliptical journey through language and family photographs to recapture their days together.

Part documentary, part dramatic recreation, and entirely original, Tony Ayers' SADNESS is a remarkable achievement. William Yang delivers a profoundly penetrating monologue that explores the relationship between AIDS, his ethnicity and his sexual orientation as he seeks to unravel the mystery surrounding the murder of his Chinese Australian uncle in 1920.

As Outfest welcomes filmmakers and film programmers from around the world to Los Angeles, it is a pleasure to open the festival in celebration of international queerdom and good film with the winner of the Berlin International Film Festival’s 1999 Teddy Award, SHOW ME LOVE. Full of passion and intelligence, this dead-on portrait of adolescent love is a moving piece of cinema as well as a jubilation of sexuality, courage and independence.

Super cool Elin is an explosive teenage bombshell who is bored crazy with her life in the sleepy Swedish town of Amål. Agnes is a social outcast who moved to Amål over a year ago but still has not been able to make any friends. She has, however, managed to privately nurse a colossal crush on Elin and waxes on about it in her computer journal. Against Agnes' wishes, her parents insist on throwing a 16th birthday party for her. Of course, nobody shows up … that is, except for Elin and her sister, Jessica who come looking for free liquor. When Elin accidentally sees what Agnes has been writing on her computer, she takes on a dare for 20 bucks that she will kiss her, making Agnes the butt of cruel jokes at school. But Elin becomes racked with guilt, and moreover, she must admit that the kiss did not quite leave her cold.

Director Lukas Moodysson has created a bold and inspiring film that boasts lush cinematography, atmospheric sound design, and an honest script brimming with humor. With amazingly penetrating lead performances by Alexandra Dahlström and Rebecca Liljeberg, SHOW ME LOVE is a remarkable achievement with universal appeal.

From the opening offscreen massacre to a serene but twisted cemetery scene, SITCOM proves to be a Buñuelian black comedy with a heart of gold. OUTFEST audience members may recall Francois Ozon's charming A SUMMER DRESS, which won the audience award for Best Short Film in 1997. SITCOM adds an icy chill to all that sunniness, offering viewers the full spectrum of Ozon's talent. The story focuses on an uptight French family that is improbably but irrevocably changed when the father brings home a pet rat. One by one, father and mother, sister and brother become obsessed with the rat, which mysteriously unleashes secret personalities that each one has repressed. This film has something to please and/or offend almost everyone: interracial sex, whips and chains, murder, attempted suicide, incest, and a multigenerational homosexual orgy in the boy's bedroom of a proper bourgeois home. All in all, this cinematic celebration of perversity confirms Ozon as a fast-rising star in the queer film universe.

Our favorite bad boy of queer cinema has accomplished yet another controversial, creative, provocative and entirely playful piece of – porn? Yes indeedy, Bruce La Bruce finally goes all the way with SKIN FLICK, a film which is designed to offend, enrage and push erotic buttons you would like to deny you have. Reinhold, member of a neo-skinhead gang in London, screws his girlfriend, Cameltoe wild in their kitchen. Meanwhile his gangmates, Dirk & Deiter steal, bash and fuck throughout the city on their way to Reinhold’s house. Cameltoe isn't thrilled when the guys arrive. Like pigs, they grab what little is in the kitchen, sparking a big fight between Reinhold and Cameltoe. Finally Reinhold kicks her out of the house to the amusement of his mates. Realizing that they don't have any money, they decide to visit a faggot. La Bruce has created a heady new breed of pornography that employs a variety of devices alternative to explicit boning to maintain sexual energy between "money shots". Juxtapositions of abject and reactionary stories over hot sex create a culpability in the viewer which ripens them for arousal. A kick-ass soundtrack underscore Bruce's unique brand of twisted humor, including crude Monica Lewinsky jokes, goofy skinheads who trips over their shoelaces, and a seduction scene that begins with plumbers butt. SKIN FLICK is strong sauce for the open-minded viewer.

With few options and desperate to escape before the city destroys him, Johnny works the streets. Dreams die hard and Johnny soon finds that leaving is never easy. Written and directed by Nickolas Perry (Must Be the Music) and Executive Produced by Gus Van Sant, Speedway Junky is a heartbreaking ode to innocence lost and found and the desperate, uneasy friendship of two boys who discover that they only have each other. The film features powerful and effecting performances by Jesse Bradford, Jordan Brower and Daryl Hannah as Eric's surrogate mother, and stand-out cameo appearances by Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Tiffani-Amber Thiesen, and Patsy Kensit.

James Herbert delivers a luscious treat for experimental film lovers with this masterpiece of romantic impressionist and homoerotic filmmaking. Using meditative pacing, jarring juxtaposition and piercingly intimate scenarios, Herbert creates a portrait of an intensely sensual relationship, not only with the characters of the film, but with the formal elements of the film as well. Carter and Andy are two young and beautiful American boys summering in Italy. The two spend their time biking between their apartment in the city and a painting studio in the country, all the while romancing a range of lovely Italian girls. Herbert uses unconventional characterization to make Carter and Andy into exotic muses whose sensuality quietly saturates every scene they inhabit. Dialogue is sparse and is less a narrative device than an element used to create moments of verbal intimacy to accent their omnipresent nakedness. Gorgeous cinematography, extreme changes in focal lengths, superb editing and fantastic sound design combine to create a profoundly sensual journey, entirely visceral in effect. SPEEDY BOYS seduces the viewer through the senses while feeding the intellect a very heady wine.
