(DON'T TELL
ANYONE)
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
SATURDAY, JULY 10 9:30PM DGA 1 24
TUESDAY, JULY 13 4:30PM VILLAGE 57

DIR: Francisco J. Lombardi, 1998, Peru, 35mm, 111 min.

In Lima, Peru, everything could have been so easy for Joaquin. His family is well off, his studies have never given him any headaches and his girlfriends think he is a classy guy. But sometimes, having everything isn't enough. DON’T TELL ANYONE is a groundbreaking, honest and hard-hitting tale of the troubles that accompany a Peruvian man's search for sexual identity in a country intolerant of open homosexuality.

All his life, Joaquin knew he preferred men. But he dared not tell anyone, not his father, Luis Felipe, a racist and unobliging male chauvinist patriarch who tries to beat the secrets of masculinity into him, nor his mother, Marichuca, whose pious Catholicism deepens his sense of guilt. But soon Joaquin begins a passionate and tangled affair with Gonzalo that puts him face to face with his own homosexuality, as well as with the extraordinary and complicated forces in Peru that work to keep him locked in the closet. Based on the controversial novel by Peruvian writer, Jaime Bayly, DON’T TELL ANYONE is a powerful and unique portrait of the dichotomous world of homosexuality that exists in Peru and many parts of Latin America.

DIR: Katherine Sender, 1998, USA, video, 63 min.

Beginning with the 1967 CBS Reports: The Homosexuals, to the rise and fall of Ellen, filmmaker Katherine Sender chronicles mainstream America's introduction to homosexuality and exposes those stereotypes that have remained constant throughout this period. From a period of almost complete invisibility, images of gay men and women are first portrayed as mentally ill, then as criminals and, later, as foils to reaffirm the heterosexuality and normalcy of television's mainstream characters. This engaging documentary is an analysis of television's role as a powerful influence on society. Those who wish to change the portrayal of lesbians, gays and bisexuals to reflect the diversity of our community as we enter the next milennium should not miss this powerful, provocative work.

OI! WARNING
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
SUNDAY, JULY 11 8:30PM DGA 1 39

DIR: Dominik and Benjamin Reding, 1999, Germany, 35mm, 90 min.

A jarring, powerful first feature from sibling co-directors Dominik and Benjamin Reding, OI! WARNING tells the story of a young man's search for male identity in a world where masculinity is up for grabs. Young Janosch, bored with family life and impatient to prove his manhood, seeks out his old school friend Koma in Dortmund. Janosch needs a role model, and Koma — now a skinhead, though lacking a political worldview — is happy to have an admirer, and re-shapes Janosch in his image. But when Janosch meets Zottel, an outsider who lives in squalor and takes pride in his leftist politics, Janosch is romantically drawn to the earthy outsider, and a spiral of jealousy is set into motion with violent consequences. Lyrical and unnerving, the film is remarkable for the contradictions it points out with extreme subtlety — in particular, the razor-thin line between homoerotic tension and homophobic violence. It is also a technical tour-de-force, featuring a stunning soundtrack and masterful black-and-white cinematography that perfectly evokes the beauty and balance that Janosch seeks, and the harshness he ultimately finds.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 14 7:00PM DGA 2 74

DIRS: Katherine Brooks and Karen Klopfenstein, 1999, USA, video, 72 min.

Lesbian Casanova Cassy, an angst-ridden and budding independent filmmaker, is desperately attempting to negotiate the necessary loopholes, without sacrifices or compromise, to further her directorial career in this self-referential indie tale. When Lauren, a talented and dedicated assistant director, catches Cassy's eye, it’s not just her filmmaking talent that interests Cassy. But Lauren is straight and undertakes a concerted effort to make this abundantly clear to Cassy. When problems arise that threaten to take away funding for her film, Cassy must work furiously on a rewrite while, at the same time, coming to terms with falling in love with Lauren — a completely foreign concept for a girl who generally moves from lover to lover sans emotional attachments or consequences. Fueled by a hip soundtrack, this will-they-or-won't-they lesbian romantic dramedy is sure to keep everyone guessing.

HUBO UN TIEMPO EN QUE LOS SUENOS DIERON PASO A LARGAS NOCHES DE INSOMNIO

OPEN BODIES
DIR: Sebastien Lifshitz, 1997, France, 35mm, 48 min. IN FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES

This remarkable pair of films from Mexico and France paints highly stylized portraits of men's troubled sexual identities, and the strange, often dangerous encounters to which this ambiguity can lead. In HUBO UN TIEMPO... Bruno, a young man, works at putting up flyers around town. When he spies handsome Umberto working at a fairground, the two begin an on-again, off-again relationship — while Bruno himself is cruised by an elderly stranger, Paolo. The film's psychologically dense characterizations are capped by breathtaking black-and-white cinematography and austere direction that recalls Mexico's legendary Cinema D'Oro. OPEN BODIES concerns 18-year-old Remi, half-French and half-North African, who works in an Arab grocery but spends his spare time floating from one intimate encounter to another, involving both men and women. His restlessness suggests both freedom and alienation, and only the diversion of a professional movie audition provides him with the promise of a solid identity.

QUEER AS FOLK
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
SATURDAY, JULY 10 2:00PM DGA 1 13
4 1/2 HOUR PROGRAM · SPECIAL TICKET PRICE $15

DIR: Charles McDougall and Sarah Harding, 1998, UK, video, 270 min.

Emerging like a cultural Big Bang in the world of queer media, QUEER AS FOLK marks a watershed in onscreen representations of gay people. By the time of this festival, you will almost certainly have read about the episodic British television show which has broken boundaries with its elements of nudity and sexual frankness. (The London Daily Mail states that the program proves "we need censorship.") More revolutionary, however, is the way it has inserted complex, well-rounded gay characterizations and themes into the mainstream, with all the dramatic force of the best American television programming — and far more guts. Besides appreciating its frankness and excellence, non-British audiences who are lucky enough to see the series may also pinch themselves in disbelief that QUEER AS FOLK really exists.

Written by Russell T. Davies, the program is ahead of its time in several respects, including its clear-headed balancing of characters' dignity (and attractiveness) with a complete inventory of their weaknesses: self-hate, cruelty, substance abuse and manipulativeness are staples of almost every episode, serving as palpable dimensions of the richly-drawn characters. These characters include Stuart, the sexy, wealthy boy-magnet with a heart of flint; Vince, his working-class (and secretly love-lorn) best friend, and Nathan, the high-school twinkie who's determined to get a sex life but who struggles to hold his own in a world of adults who've seen it all. Around these three men revolve a constellation of supporting characters (including well-drawn lesbian characters) so complex but so familiar it's hard not to sense the program's ring of truth — nor its unflinchingly queer point of view. Unlikely to be broadcast on US television, QUEER AS FOLK promises nonetheless to invigorate queer film culture, and become the stuff of legend. Be there at the beginning.
