JOYS OF SMOKING
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
FRIDAY, JULY 16 7:00PM DGA 2 100

DIR: Nick Katsapetses, 1999, USA, 16mm, 86 min.

With his commitment ceremony to his lover Daniel coming up, film student Grey sets out to document his friends' views on and experiences of relationships. Meanwhile, Daniel is secretly coming unglued at the thought of commitment, and his falling apart isn't helped any when his alcoholic mother shows up after being thrown out by her abusive husband. While Daniel refuses to deal with his family (clearly the root of his current panic), Grey turns to Daniel's mother and world-weary sister for support. THE JOYS OF SMOKING skips nimbly between Grey's interviews with his friends (lesbian, gay and straight) as they talk directly to the camera about their relationships or lack thereof, and the ongoing events in their messy lives. Add an unglamorous but appealing cast and a wicked sense of humor, and you've got a film that pleases its audience without pandering to it.

FRIDAY, JULY 16 9:30PM VILLAGE 104
FRIDAY, JULY 16 MIDNIGHT VILLAGE 108

Wash West's SQUISHY DOES PORNO created a sensation at OUTFEST '96, posing the question: "if sex is so interesting, why is most porn so boring?" His work since that time has aggressively taken on the challenge of creating erotic film that is sexy, fun and original. Working with a small crew (and often alone), West orchestrates and captures erotic moments that have great intimacy and are charged with what appears to be genuine desire. Critically acclaimed for the sensuality, humor and savvy of his work — most recently for his NAKED HIGHWAY, which scored an unprecedented sweep of both the Gay Erotic Video Awards and the Adult Video News Awards — West has continued to develop a complex and sexy aesthetic, and has attracted a growing popular following as well. Join Wash as he discusses the development of his unique brand of cinema. He'll present clips from all his works, including early "guerrilla" videos to previously-unseen clips from his two new movies TECHNICAL ECSTASY and ANIMUS. Listen and ask questions as he shares his vision of the future of porn.

DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
TUESDAY, JULY 13 7:00PM DGA 1 61

DIR: Kutlug Ataman, 1998, Germany, 35 mm, 93 min.

Set in a world of macho hustler tops and effeminate drag bottoms, LOLA AND BILIDIKID offers a rare glimpse into a Turkish emigre subculture in which intolerance, fear and self-loathing are the subtext for this powerful gay coming-of-age story. Sixteen-year-old Murat cruises Berlin's parks, a voyeur to gay sex concealed by trees and shadows. He is torn between the need to experience this taboo and his Muslim family's hopes that he will be the golden boy who will allow them to escape the ghetto. Tormented by memories of a long-lost brother, Murat is shocked to discover that this brother is now Lola, a transvestite in Berlin's seamy underworld. When Lola is mysteriously killed, Murat goes underground in a desparate search to vindicate his brother's death and their shared queer identity. Director Kutlug Altman effectively explores the right to be different within a culture driven by assimilation and offers the hope that we all can survive tragedy and overcome shame.

LOVE'S DEBRIS
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
SUNDAY, JULY 11 6:15PM VILLAGE 37

DIR: Werner Schroeter, 1996, France/Germany, 35mm, 125 min.

Simultaneously a celebration of music and an inquest into its meaning, LOVE'S DEBRIS is an opera lover's dream come true. Filmmaker Werner Schroeter, also a noted director of opera and theater, explores the mystic forces which motivate and are unleashed by singing. Theorizing that the singing voice is the highest possible expression of love, Schroeter gathers several contemporary and legendary opera stars, along with the people they love, to a medieval monastery near Paris to perform arias and discuss the intersection of singing and love. Assisting with the interviews are actresses Isabelle Huppert and Carole Bouquet. Current opera luminaries Laurence Dale and Sergei Larin (with their male lovers) and legendary divas such as Anita Cerquetti, Martha Modl and Rita Gorr (accompanied by her female partner of many years) also engage in stimulating discussions and aria performances that range from exhilarating to devastating. Both indulgent and inquisitive, this picture offers a front-row seat to an electrifying musical experience, and offers a rare, insider look at the singer's art.

Outfest achievement award

GUS VAN SANT
Now in its third year, the OUTFEST Achievement Award was created to pay tribute to the outstanding accomplishments of gays and lesbians in film. We are pleased to recognize Gus Van Sant, Academy Award nominated director (My Own Private Idaho, To Die For, Good Will Hunting, Psycho), author (Pink) and photographer for his emblazoned commmitment to the exhibition and creation of fully realized lesbian and gay characters on the silver screen and for persevering unabashedly in the entertainment industry as an out gay man.
With a vision that is both personal and challenging, Van Sant has achieved both critcal as well as popular success as a filmmaker. He became instantly revered in the world of independent cinema by putting forth innovative and daring works touching upon such taboo themes such as the gritty queer realism of Mala Noche and the unrequited gay love of a forlorn male hustler in My Own Private Idaho. Often using the lush yet enigmatic, setting of the Pacific Northwest, Van Sant has become known for his keen eye, his willingness to take risks, and a strong gay sensibilty that defies stereotypes, cliches, or political correctness. It is for this unique combination of talent and consistent excellence that we honor Gus Van Sant with the OUTFEST Achievement Award.

THE MAN WHO
DROVE WITH MANDELA
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
SATURDAY, JULY 17 4:30PM DGA 1 82

DIR: Greta Schiller, 1998, UK/SouthAfrica/Holland, 35mm, 82 min.

South Africa, 1962. Disguised as the chauffeur of a distinguished gentleman, Nelson Mandela drove a gleaming limousine across the length and breadth of the country, all the while organizing the armed struggle against the apartheid regime. Mandela's story is part of history. But who was the mysterious, elegant gentleman who was chauffeured around by Mandela? Greta Schiller, director or the acclaimed documentaries PARIS WAS A WOMAN and BEFORE STONEWALL returns with this remarkable documentary that demonstrates the intersection of gay history with the struggle for racial parity in South Africa. The man who drove with Mandela was Cecil Williams, an acclaimed gay white theatre director living in South Africa. Williams was a committed Communist who lent his support to the struggle against apartheid. Schiller relates Williams story while skillfully drawing parallels between the plight of South African blacks and the dilemma of a gay man of conscience, living in a society that prohibits expression of his identity and core beliefs.
