DAS TRIO
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
WEDNESDAY, JULY 14 9:45PM DGA 1 81

DIR: Hermine Huntgeburth, Germany, 1997, 35mm, 97 min.

From the producer of the gay German classic, Frank Ripploh's Taxi Zum Klo, comes this sexy comedy about the criminal and sexual antics of a band of small-time thieves. Zobel, his tomboy daughter Lizzie and his devoted lover Karl spend their days picking pockets in shopping malls and airports and traveling from places to place in a huge Winnebago top-heavy with loot and interpersonal drama. When an accident lands Karl in the hospital, Lizzie recruits young, boyish Rudolf as his replacement. Smelling trouble, Zobel warns the team against exchanging bodily fluids ... but it's no use, as hunky Rudolf is soon pursued by both Zobel and Lizzie and finds himself (not entirely unwillingly) in the middle of a heated father-daughter love triangle. One of Germany's most popular actors, Gotz George, best known for playing macho tough guy roles, turns in a tender, dimensional performance as the roguish, gay ringleader Zobel in this sweet offbeat film.

DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
TUESDAY, JULY 13 9:45PM DGA 1 67

DIRS: Felix Sabroso and Dunia Ayaso, 1998, Spain, 35 mm, 92 min.

Riotously funny and zany beyond belief, this madcap comic thriller from Spain delivers when three flatmates, short on funds and unable to pay the rent, decide to interview for a fourth. Throwing caution to the wind, they forego the formality of the interview when they feast their eyes upon the stunningly handsome and well-built Lucas. The real trouble begins when Lucas is found, half naked, with a complete set of kitchen knives buried in his chest. While recounting the events to a repressed inspector, the three original flatmates volley back and forth blaming one another for the departure of the adored Lucas and then dispute over which of the three Lucas liked best. In a series of flashbacks, each recounts his own version of courting Lucas, certain that his love for Lucas was reciprocated. But when police inspector Clara probes deeper, it becomes abundantly clear that Lucas was an enigma as dark and mysterious as his sultry eyes.

F IS A BASTARD
(F. EST UN SALAUD)
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
FRIDAY, JULY 16 9:45PM DGA 1 107

DIR: Marcel Gisler, 1998, Switzerland/France, 35mm, 92 min.

This powerful drama rewards its audience with high-pitched emotional intrigue, painting a compelling portrait of youthful first love tempered with a healthy dose of hard truth.

Sixteen-year-old student Beni, raised in boring, petit-bourgeois comfort, becomes obsessed with Fögi, the darkly sexy and rebellious lead singer in a rock band called "The Minks." Going to work as a roadie for the band, Beni becomes his hero’s lover, and then his plaything. As Fögi's career begins a downward spiral fueled by insecurity and drug use, his casual indifference to Beni deteriorates into cruelty and exploitation. Beni remains steadfast in his devotion, however, submitting to ever-greater indignities and dangers until he must weigh his love against his survival.

Intelligently scripted and beautifully photographed, this sensitive character study demonstrates director Marcel Gisler's sure perception of complex human needs, and provides a penetrating look at the nobility and the heavy price of romantic obsession and unconditional love.

get BRUCE
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
WEDNESDAY, JULY 14 8:00PM Egyptian 77

DIR: Andrew J. Kuehn, 1999, USA, 35mm, 75 min.

Profiling a comedy writer on almost every major award show and laugh doctor to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, GET BRUCE celebrates the career of one of show business’s hardest-working unsung heroes--Bruce Vilanch. In interviews from his celebrity client list, Billy Crystal, Whoopie Goldberg, Robin Williams, and Paul Reiser sing his praises and share anecdotes that amuse and delight. When sharing stories, they manage to delve deeply into their personal lives before the room explodes into wisecracks and jokes. Vilanch’s first muse was actually Bette Midler, who discovered him during her humble beginnings at a nightclub in Chicago. It is he she credits for introducing her to Sophie Tucker, still a staple of her act today. GET BRUCE is not skin deep, however; from a childhood with adoptive parents in New Jersey to landing a job as a reporter as the Chicago Tribune to his active life in Los Angeles, you bounce along with Vilanch. There is wonderful heart to this generous and committed man with his wild hair, and clad in selections from his trademark T-shirt collection. In a medium that is all about collaboration, it is refreshing to see a film about a subject who is rarely in the spotlight. Outspoken, sometimes touching, but always hilarious. GET BRUCE raises the curtain exposing an incredible talent in a very lively film. -John Cooper, Associate Director Sundance Institute

From these humble beginnings, Golden Threads flourished and developed a solid national and international following, fueled largely by the word of mouth of its loyal members. Director Lucy Winer captures lively, entertaining stories of couples who met at Golden Threads events, singles who are earnestly searching for love, and an endangered history of the struggles of being gay in less accepting times. THE HAYDAY
OF JAGUAR
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
SATURDAY, JULY 10 MIDNIGHT LAEMMLE 27

Once there was a time of unshaven male bodies and funky fashions quickly doffed to reveal said bodies. It was an era when uninhibited sexual expressions interlaced with sincere stories of love lost and found. This world existed on 16mm film and in the hearts of faithful theatergoers. Since then, video and body-waxing herald a new regime of pornography. But happy days are here again in this presentation of rare theatrical trailers for the Jaguar line of porn features, dating from the 1970s and presented in 16mm prints. Enticing, explicit visual clips join with booming narration, promising dramatic depth and all-too-often delivering hilarity, along witht the expected, er, amourous inspiration. Come partake in this rare, communal opportunity, featuring a spoken presentation of reminiscences by producers Brian King and Ted Sawicki, that recalls the good old days of male erotic entertainment with heart as well as hard-ons.

HEAD ON
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
SUNDAY, JULY 11 6:00PM DGA 1 36

DIR: Ana Kokkinos, 1998, Australia, 35mm, 100 min.

Beautiful, kinetic and throbbing with sexual energy, HEAD ON is a study of a young man's straining to assert himself in a traditional environment which is both nourishing and constricting. In many ways a companion piece to director Ana Kokkinos' featurette ONLY THE BRAVE about teenage lesbians in Melbourne's Greek community, HEAD ON examines cultures and generations in collision. The film paints a portrait of Ari, a strikingly handsome young gay man still living with his parents in Melbourne. Jobless and alienated, Ari feels trapped in the confines of his patriarchal Greek community, and chafes under comparisons to his male relatives. For Ari, sex is release, freedom and rebellion, and he acts out with plenty of anonymous sex and drugs. But he is not immune to the comforts of tradition, nor without loyalty to the people who love him. It is this tug-of-war between rootedness and freedom that fuels his reckless and fearless search for self-knowledge. Like Ari, HEAD ON itself is an exercise in fearlessness thanks to its impassioned director and an extraordinary cast who bring an edgy story to dynamic life.

HIT AND RUNWAY
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
WEDNESDAY, JULY 14 5:00PM DGA 1 72

DIR: Christopher Livingston, 1999, USA, 35mm, 109 min.

As Alex, a wannabe screenwriter, knows: If you have the 10% inspiration, but aren’t willing to give the 90% perspiration, then get a writing partner. Of course, when Alex, a hopelessly heterosexual Italian Catholic, teams with Eliot, a quintessential New York City Jewish homosexual, the result is an often funny, always heartfelt struggle to finish their screenplay and overcome their personal differences. When Alex scores Elliot a date with a gay waiter who fetishizes Jewish men (Kerr Smith, Dawson’s Creek), their relationship—and their script—takes some drastic turns. Christopher Livingston, director and co-writer, brings a refreshing directness and wry sensibility to this charming, heartwarming tale of a friendship that battles impossible odds. In the tradition of Kiss Me Guido, HIT AND RUNWAY features deft performances from leads Michael Parducci and Peter Jacobson, and a compelling sense of warmth that wins you over to both characters.

HO DOWN
DATE TIME LOCATION PROGRAM #
FRIDAY, JULY 16 2:00PM VILLAGE 95

They are good looking, charismatic, and make you feel like you are the center of their universe . . . but they always seem to have the scent of the dog on them. Yes, we are talking about that unique figure in the queer animal kingdom called "The Ho." This diverse selection of films expose three sides of these crafty characters. In the formally inventive LOVERFILM, Ho' #1 (oops, was that the filmmaker!) is a charming and witty character who invites you to reminisce with him, man by man, ALL of his past lovers. Jason Romilly's SPENT is a moody, disturbing and completely penetrating study of Ho' #2, a mooch, a liar, a loser, and a thief who is struggling to come to terms with his homosexuality all the while mowing down everyone in his path. Ho' #3 swears up and down to your face, "I'm really, really, really, really sorry. And I will change!" in Daniel McIvor's brilliantly hilarious UNTIL I HEAR FROM YOU, an expose of one ho's feelings of selfishness and self-obsession as he guiltily faces the task of contrition. When all is said and done in this program, we are reassured of a fact we always suspected to be true - You can't teach an old dog new tricks!
