2 SECONDS |

| DATE | TIME | LOCATION | PROGRAM # |
| SATURDAY, JULY 10 | 2:00PM | VILLAGE | 12 |
DIR: Manon Briand, 1998, Canada, 35mm, 100 min
For professional athletes, all aspects of life are viewed through the lens of their sport. Director Manon Briand brilliantly offers a glance through such a lens as she captures what it means for an adorably butch, champion mountain-bike racer to embrace life after she is forced to end her career. After discovering a gray hair on her head, Laurence hesitates at the start gate before hurtling down a mountain in an otherwise flawless run. The hesitation costs her the championship by 2 seconds and she is forced into retirement. Briand’s delightfully entertaining script and direction couple irresistibly with Charlotte Laurier's performance as Laurence. Her singleminded pursuit of her passion for cycling lends an innocence to the story that is both charming and inspirational. 2 SECONDS is a well-crafted film about the redeeming virtue of staying true to what you love most.

DIR: John Scagliotti, 1999, USA, 16mm, 88 min.
Narrated by Melissa Etheridge, AFTER STONEWALL is an extraordinary documentary that captures the immense scope of changes in the gay rights movement from the 1969 Stonewall riots to the dawn of the new millennium. Activists, politicians, novelists, and drag queens including Larry Kramer, Barney Frank, Rita Mae Brown and Coco LaChine, all tell their stories of the good fight — from the sexy, politically charged Firehouse dances and the riddance of homosexuality from the "sick" list, to the rise of queer politicians, the Anita Bryant backlash, the celebrification of AIDS, lesbian chic, and the fight for the right to marry and go military. Rich in detail, well-archived, and remarkably inclusive, AFTER STONEWALL, is both an epic history and an intimate account of the maturing of a political movement. An inspiring watch!

AIMEE & JAGUAR |

| DATE | TIME | LOCATION | PROGRAM # |
| SUNDAY, JULY 11 | 3:30PM | DGA 1 | 32 |
DIR: Max Färberböck, 1999, Germany, 35mm, 126 min.
AIMEE & JAGUAR made lesbian and gay cinematic history by being the first queer film ever to open the Berlin Film Festival. Färberböck's film is an incredibly bold and sensual telling of the true story of two women - one Jewish and one German - who dared to fall deeply in love with each other at the height of the holocaust. Lilly Wurst is a Nazi super-mom who won a government award for producing four "racially pure" Aryan sons for the fatherland. Felice Schragenheim is a gutsy, risk taking assimilated German Jew who works as a journalist at a Nazi newspaper by day and the Jewish underground by night.
One evening at a concert, Felice spots Lilly in the crowd and falls head over heels in love. As it turns out, Felice's present lover, Ilse, is Lilly's housemaid and she is immediately put to the task of passing on Felice's love letters to Lilly. Felice manages to work her way to Lilly, who succumbs to Felice’s robust personality and powerful advances. Their romance begins against all odds with the atrocities of war and anti-Semitism fueling their courage to be together. Juliane Köhler and Maria Schrader turn in phenomenal performances in this tragic love story which is a product of the determination of Lilly Wurst, who is now 85 and still living in Berlin, to keep the memory of her beloved friend alive.

| MONDAY, JULY 12 | 9:45PM | DGA 1 | 55 |
DIR: Ventura Pons, 1998, Spain, 35mm, 90 min.
This impassioned, insightful drama from Spain tells an emotional story in which love and hate, friendship, life and death are all weighed in generous proportions. Jaume Clara, a brilliant and accomplished professor of medieval literature, should be enjoying the fruits of a life of hard work and achievement, but he is beset with failing health and distraught over a passionate fixation on his beautiful, intelligent but withdrawn student, David. When a response to an anonymous call-boy's ad unexpectedly brings David to his door, Jaume foregoes the tempting opportunity for easy sex with his student and instead hatches an elaborate and dangerous plot to manifest his deep love, one which risks his career, his friendship with a beloved colleague, and the possibility of cruelty and violence at the hands of heartless David. The two men's mismatched passions and their well-matched intellects make for a feverish war of wills, one from which neither one will survive unharmed.
An official selection of the Berlin International Film Festival, this taut, high-stakes drama is brought vividly to life by an outstanding cast and a sure directorial hand that perfectly modulates the story's twin elements of introspection and shock.

| DATE | TIME | LOCATION | PROGRAM # |
| THURSDAY, JULY 15 | 8:30PM | FORD | 90 |
DIR: Rose Troche, 1998, UK, 35mm, 95 min.
We are delighted to kick off Outfest Under the Stars with this highly anticipated and immensely entertaining new feature by Rose Troche. From the director of GO FISH — the trailblazing 1994 hit about lesbian dating habits — Troche continues to pioneer new ground with this witty and wonderfully crafted romantic comedy about relationships and sexual identity at the turn of the millennium.
The story revolves around a handsome pair of British flatmates, Darren and Leo. Darren has no problems in the romance department since his hot affair with Jeremy, a real estate agent, keeps him on the frontiers of sexual adventure in other people's bedrooms and hallways. On the other hand, Leo is more uptight and has a hard time letting himself go, until a concerned workmate persuades him to join a "New Man" therapy group. While passing around the "honesty stone" in therapy, Leo admits he is attracted to another member of the group, the exceptionally handsome, and ostensibly straight, Brendan. Brendan is struggling to keep alive a failing seven-year relationship with his business partner, Sally, but one "wild man weekend" turns everything around!
Effervescent with humor and visual style, BEDROOMS & HALLWAYS is a smart, original and decidedly modern take on relationships among gay men, straight men and straight women. Troche restablishes her gift for romantic comedy in this surprising and fresh tour-de-force which proves that you don’t have to be a gay boy to make a hit about hunky boys and their drama.

DIR: Thom Fitzgerald, 1999, USA, 35mm, 60 min.
Harkening to a time of supposed innocence, but garnished throughout with generous dollops of naughty fun, this inventive blend of fiction and documentary from director Thom Fitzgerald (THE HANGING GARDEN) offers an enticing glimpse at the birth of male body-worship as big business. The film traces the career of photographer/filmmaker Bob Miser, one of a handful of '50s impresarios of muscle magazines and short films featuring buff models, skimpy costumes and thinly-veiled homoerotic themes. Interlaced with re-enactments of movie and photo shoots at Miser's home (with his Mom acting as CEO), are testimonials from personalities such as Jack La Lanne and Joe Dallesandro, who participated in similar projects. Backstage shenanigans lead to moral outrage and court battles, threatening to draw the curtains closed on Miser’s enterprise, but even in the face of tribulation, his story retains a sweetness, almost forgotten today, when gay and straight onlookers could all look appreciatively at images celebrating "physical culture" and agree upon the appeal of all that beef.

BELLINI'S DRIVE |

| DATE | TIME | LOCATION | PROGRAM # |
| SUNDAY, JULY 18 | 4:45PM | DGA 2 | 140 |
DIR: Jeff Stephenson, 1998, Canada, 16mm, 71 mins.
Paul Bellini was the most famous person from the small town of Timmins, Ontario. That is, until Shania Twain came along. The fastest selling female country artist in history, her meteoric rise to stardom quickly eclipsed Bellini's spotlight as Timmins' Emmy-nominated writer and "guy in the towel" on The Kids in the Hall. "I hate her," he drawls caustically to Jeff Stephenson's documentary camera, which tracks Bellini's journey back to Timmins, including a visit to his family and a hometown concert featuring his new nemesis, Shania. At home, Bellini is greeted by his old world Italian parents holding a cardboard sign that reads "Paul Bellini Drive" — poking fun at city officials naming a road Shania Twain Way. Among the many laughs are poignant moments, especially Bellini recalling his parents' reaction to news he is gay. As Paul tries to use his "celebrity" status to obtain a meeting with Shania, we come to better understand his ambitions and the fickle nature of fame. Bellini's Drive is ultimately a touching tale juxtaposing the homecomings of the two most famous people from Timmins, Ontario.

DIR: Anne Wheeler, 1998, Canada, 35mm, 98 min.
Delightfully ambitious and terrifically entertaining, this super sexy story of love and courage unites people from many walks of life, as it moves briskly to the beat of girl power.
Nineteen year-old Maggie (Karyn Dwyer), an attractive, sometime law student, has taken a break from her studies to enjoy life. She does so as a dancer at the local night club, "The Cat's Ass" and as a clerk at a hip, queer bookstore. Homophobic skinheads threaten the equilibrium, and repressive Canadian customs laws even threaten the existence of the "obscene" bookstore — but clouds disperse when Maggie meets sexy wanderer Kim (Christina Cox), who moves into her sights, her bed and then her apartment! Still, with adult joys come adult responsibilities, which Maggie learns during a surprise visit from her younger brother Paul (himself a bundle of volatile hormones) and her newly-divorced Mom, who doesn't know that Maggie is gay, and who needs a place to get herself together. Before long, family and friends are hurtling over secrets, taboos, dangers and new experiences like Olympic athletes.
Gay, straight, butch, femme, bisexual and transsexual characters populate this upbeat, timely story of friends supporting each other as they try to make a day’s pay, and to share a day’s love, each in their own way.

DIR: Yonfan, 1998, Hong Kong, 35mm, 101 min.
Renowned director and photographer Yonfan brings his twin instincts for ravishing beauty and for high drama to this, his latest feature film. Set in modern-day Hong Kong, the film dramatizes a recent public scandal in which more than a thousand photographs of Hong Kong policemen, in various stages of undress, were discovered in the apartment of a wealthy photographer. From this premise, BISHONEN....BEAUTY weaves a lavish and provocative tale blending the contradictory worlds of gigolos and policemen, in which rapturous infatuation threatens order at every turn. The story centers around Jet, the most celebrated call-boy in Hong Kong, and Sam, a stunning-looking policeman who exudes mystery from behind an innocent façade. When hardened Jet feigns vulnerability to try and seduce Sam, the supposedly harmless cop proves to be more than Jet bargained for! Featuring lush cinematography and music, and pervaded by an almost operatic suggestion of imminent tragedy, BISHONEN....BEAUTY offers a privileged glimpse of a rarely-depicted side of life in Hong Kong, and a visual experience that more than lives up to its name.

LOVE STORY
DIR: Catrine Clay, 1997, USA, video, 60min,
These two rich and wonderfully archived documentaries excavate lesbian histories from the ashes of the Holocaust. BUT I WAS A GIRL… tells the story of this Jewish lesbian’s escape from death at the hands of the Nazis, and her consequent rise to success as a symphony conductor. Freida was a fighter destined for great things from birth. As a young girl, she dreamed of becoming a musician and soon mastered the cello. She succeeded in conducting a variety of orchestras in Europe and after narrowly escaping the Nazis, Freida moved to Southern California, where she became the first woman conductor ever to have her own chamber orchestra in the United States. A LOVE STORY documents the heart-wrenching story of Lilly Wust and Felice Schrader who were lovers in Weimar Germany. Interviews with Lilly, an Aryan hausfrau, provide insight into her first encounters with Felice, the seduction which led her to fall hopelessly in love with the Jewish 21-year-old, and the horror of learning that the love of her life was a prime candidate for imprisonment in a Nazi concentration camp.

Whoever said lack of talent hinders success didn't meet The Stupendous Six. A hilariously untalented troupe of singers and dancers still rehearsing their disco-inspired moves at a Kansas amusement park, The Six are summarily fired by the park's manager, who tells them they are out of style. Undeterred, they pick themselves up, dust themselves off and hit the road in search of their solid gold-paved dreams of fame and fortune. Led by their 260-pound, hopelessly optimistic lead-dancer/choreographer, this motley sextet arrives in Hollywood courtesy of the hottest wheels sinces the Partidge Family's tour bus, where they are quickly seduced by an assortment of lovable oddballs and goofs. With one shot at stardom, they compete in the grand finale of the Little Miss Orange County Beauty Pageant. Do they have what it takes? The madcap comic vision of co-writers/co-directors Steven Falick and Ben Zook, CAN’T STOP DANCING stars Saturday Night Live alumnae Melanie Hutsell and Janeane Garofalo, ER's Noah Wyle and Laura Innes, indie fave Ileana Douglas, the talented Taylor Negron, and Margaret Cho, and the drop dead gorgeous Vincent Ventresca and Tuc Watkins.

Brimming over with humor and smarts, CHUTNEY POPCORN is a delightfully entertaining investigation of what family values look like at the intersection of American culture, Indian culture, queerness, and interracial love. Reena (Ganatra) is a photographer, a henna-tattoo artist, and the black sheep of her traditional Indian family. She lives with her white girlfriend, Lisa (Jill Hennessy) and harbors a serious jealousy for her straight sister, Sarita, who has all of her mother's favor. It seems Reena can never do anything as good as Sarita. But when Sarita gets married and discovers she can't have children, Reena can finally do something her perfect sister can't: get pregnant. Obsessed with helping Sarita, and with winning her mother's approval, Reena decides she will be a surrogate mother for her sister. But when baby is finally on the way, everyone involved has second thoughts — is Reena's baby just a big mistake? A wonderful cast including Madhur Jaffrey, Jill Hennessy and Sakina Jaffrey support triple-threat Ganatra as she delivers a charming script (with co-writer, Susan Carnival), a winning performance, and an exceptional feature film.

| DATE | TIME | LOCATION | PROGRAM # |
| SATURDAY, JULY 17 | 9:30PM | VILLGE | 125 |
DIR: Parris Patton, 1998, USA, 16mm, 61 min.
CREATURE is a beautifully photographed and exceedingly honest documentary about four years in the life of Kyle, a young man who grew up on a farm in North Carolina and ran away at the age of twelve. He makes his way to Los Angeles where he transforms himself first into "Stacy Hollywood", an Arena drag queen diva, then to just plain "Stacy", a trannie-lady in waiting. Full of opinion and panache, Patton weaves Stacy's colorful character with that of her father, a dried drunk who has given himself over to Christ and who is terribly dissaproving of his "son." Despite the fact that her therapist denies his permission to undergo a sex change operation, Stacy is as hell bent on making the operation happen as she is on returning to her home in North Carolina with breasts and hips and her "straight" Latino boyfriend. Packed with surprising reflections from friends and family (and a few revealing whammies from Stacy herself), CREATURE illuminates the complex spiritual and moral difficulties that can abound in the search for one's true identity when it must simultaneously be constructed.
