Outfest is a community. We are home to filmmakers and film-lovers. We are a cultural destination that reaches from Los Angeles to New York City – and beyond. But most importantly, Outfest is a representation of our humanity and our human rights. Through artistic expression and through the prism of cinema, Outfest continues to be a leader in LGBT rights. We are creating change, one story at a time.

The 2014 Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival reaffirms our mission and celebrates the creativity and power of storytelling. Our Gala screenings represent some of the most acclaimed and thematically diverse films of the year. From our Opening Night film —Susanna Fogel’s LIFE PARTNERS, starring Leighton Meester, Adam Brody, and Gabourey Sidibe — to the Sundance award-winner and delicately emotional LILTING by Hong Khaou to the deliciously irreverent and out of this world (literally!) comedy SPACE STATION 76 starring Matt Bomer, Patrick Wilson and Liv Tyler, this year’s line-up is a clear indication that LGBT cinema is truly thriving.

Our 2014 festival shines a spotlight on Provocateurs, where we pay tribute to the artists and activists who refuse to play by the rules, with screenings showcasing Pat Rocco, Bruce LaBruce, and Susan Sontag, to name but a few! Our Docs @ 5 series highlights five extraordinary documentaries that delve deep into the human spirit and the Platinum section features a stimulating mix of boundary-pushing video, performance, and multi-media works. In addition our Special Events include a free Family Fun day, an inside look at the new series “Transparent,” and a 25th anniversary screening of the groundbreaking and powerful LONGTIME COMPANION.

I am so proud of our organization and of our festival this year. And you should be too! We couldn’t do this without your support and belief in the power of storytelling. A huge thank you to all the staff, volunteers, filmmakers, members, sponsors, and film lovers who are the collective beating heart of this operation. Each of you are a part of our community; each of you are affecting change through the choice you have made in supporting Outfest and our mission. Thank you.

And if you can’t get enough of Outfest Los Angeles this summer, join us for our year-round programs. July 24-29 we once again partner with NewFest and the Film Society of Lincoln Center to bring New York City an incredible LGBT film festival. In Los Angeles, we continue to host the Outfest West Hollywood Series, the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project Series, and special screenings just for our members.

I am beyond thrilled to be celebrating with you this year’s eclectic and inspiring Outfest Los Angeles!

See you there.

DOCS @ 5

Outfest’s early-evening documentary series investigates a wide range of stories about the LGBT community. Though the lens of five extraordinary films, we’re able to experience the quest for justice by black New York lesbians under attack, the aspirations of a trans Chilean tarot card reader, the AIDS Memorial Quilt’s poignant celebration and remembrance of lives lost, the memories of a legendary Iranian visual artist, and the wizardry (and skepticism) of noted magician James “The Amazing” Randi. These portraits unfold in thrilling detail with an artistry and an energy that highlight the very best of the human spirit.
