Top 10 Tips for Navigating Outfest 2010

ANNIVERSARIES There are so many milestones to celebrate this year! We’re doing so with films and special events for the fifth year of the Outfest Legacy Project for LGBT Film Preservation, and the 25th anniversaries of Wolfe Releasing and the City of West Hollywood.

BEARS
It’s an exciting year for our big, hairy friends! Whether you’re a chaser or a bear yourself (or just a curious bystander), check out the documentary BEAR NATION (by Malcolm Ingram, 2006 Outfest Grand Jury Prize Winner for his doc SMALL TOWN GAY BAR) and BEARCITY, a sexy, funny dramatic feature by Doug Langway.

DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION
I love a good dance scene, and some of the best can be found in LEADING LADIES (with Benji Schwimmer from “Dancing with the Stars”) and our closing night gala film, SPORK.

FAMILY FUN DAY
We wanted to show how talented and clever the youngest members of the Outfest community are! Made by kids and their parents, these short films were submitted to us by Outfest families. We dare you not to say “Awww…” when you’re watching this program.

FRANCO  As in James Franco. It’s hard not to be totally smitten. Not only does he star in this year’s opening night film, HOWL, he directed a naughty short film, THE FEAST OF STEPHEN.

FREE SCREENING What’s gay about A SMALL ACT? Nothing, except that it’s directed, produced and shot by two filmmakers from the Outfest community, Jennifer Arnold and Patti Lee. We’re proud to highlight filmmakers we can claim as our own, not to mention that this doc has the power to make the world a better place.

INDIE MUSIC
We have three great music docs on The Magnetic Fields, Le Tigre and The Topp Twins. We’re especially excited about THE TOPP TWINS doc about New Zealand’s twin lesbian folksinging duo (it’s no surprise this film picked up an audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival last year).

LESBIANS We can’t say this every year, but this is a big year for lesbian films, ladies (and guys who love a good lezzie flick). Girls in prison, alien chicks, SM babes and don’t forget the new Nicole Conn movie. Just scan the film guide for cute girls (we know that’s what you do anyway), buy your tickets and prove to us that there’s an audience supporting these films!

PLATINUM
There’s some exciting stuff happening over at REDCAT, including a film about William S. Burroughs, a program curated by Campbell Ex from London, and what’s Original Plumbing? Come downtown and see.

PROGRAMMER’S PETS
I want to make sure everybody pays attention to international films in the program like THE LAST SUMMER OF LA BOYITA, THE EVENING DRESS and PAULISTA, and the short film programs (including one of most creative program titles in Outfest history, courtesy of shorts programmer Jon Korn).
