EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Outfest, the worlds leading organization in showcasing, nurturing and preserving lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender film images and artistry, is seeking an Executive Director (ED). For 25 years Outfest has led the charge, spotlighting emerging talent, creating community between filmmakers and audiences and offering a world-class forum for stories that reflect and transform LGBT lives.

The 25-member Outfest Board of Directors is seeking a visionary leader with a demonstrable fundraising and management background.  The ED must exhibit strong leadership skills and direct the successful implementation of the programs and activities of the organization.

The ED will be responsible to the Board of Directors for the effective conduct of the affairs of the organization.  S/he will supervise and direct the staff (ten year-round with additional twenty seasonal staffers), programs and activities of the organization and will be responsible for execution of the organization’s five-year strategic plan These responsibilities include implementing Board policies; advising the Board regarding strategic direction and organizational development; fundraising; and overseeing day-to-day operations, including staff activities, budgeting and financial planning.  Additionally, the ED is the principle public face for the organization and represents Outfest in myriad public venues.

The ideal candidate should be energetic, ambitious, intelligent, organized and action/goal oriented. 

Specific duties to include:

  • Fundraising: The ED will have the primary responsibility for the creation of an annual development plan that includes grants and individual giving.  The ED will manage the Board of Directors individual fundraising as well as building his/her on-going relationships with Major Donors. 
  • Board Interaction and Development: The ED will be the primary interface between the Board and the day-to-day activities of the organization.  The ED will make recommendations to the Board on strategic issues and coordinate the efforts of Board members in fundraising and policy setting. The ED will also serve as a non-voting member of the Board of Directors and on a number of Board committees.
  • Financial Management: The ED will have bottom-line accountability for a $2M budget. Overseeing budgeting, financial reporting, audit, expense control and regulatory compliance, including timely and accurate financial reporting to the Treasurer, Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Strategic Planning: The ED will facilitate and manage the current strategic plan, including fundraising, budgeting and program development. The ED will also be responsible for research and development of future strategic plans.
  • Community Relations: The ED will act as the organization’s principal spokesperson and representative.  Proven experience within the LGBT community is important, specifically the ability to speak to issues that arise within a current and historical context. 
  • General Management: The ED will manage a senior staff team who oversee administration, operations, corporate relations, programming and development, and ensures that all employees perform at a professional level. 

Qualifications

Required

  • Five years experience in executive administration
  • Demonstrable fundraising track record, including but not limited to, individual giving, corporate sponsorship, special events and private and government grants
  • Polished public speaker, excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Significant experience in budget and staff management
  • Demonstrable experience working within a non-profit context, including board governance and succession planning and continuity
  • Visionary leader           
  • Creative leader and problem solver
  • Alignment with the organization’s mission

Preferred

  • Experience managing budgets of $2M or above
  • Previous experience developing and implementing a strategic plan
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to discuss gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues
  • Demonstrates a broad knowledge and understanding of the arts, including but not limited to, filmmaking, theatre, fine art, music and the role the arts play within the cultural context of the LGBT community
  • Previous experience in volunteer recruitment, management and retention
  • Previous experience or knowledge of non-profit and/or arts management

Compensation
Competitive compensation to include an annual salary, annual merit increases (based upon performance evaluations), two weeks vacation, paid holidays, health/dental insurance, and 401(k) plan.

MAJOR GIFTS OFFICER

Status:             Exempt/Full-Time/Year-Round
Reports to:       Executive Director
Salary:            $50,000-$70,000 (depending on experience)

Outfest, the worlds leading organization in showcasing, nurturing and preserving lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender film images and artistry, is seeking a Major Gifts Officer (MGO). The MGO is responsible for maintaining and growing Outfest’s major donor program and will work with the Executive Director and the Outfest Board of Directors to raise $800,000 in 2008 (with plans to significantly grow this amount in the next few years).

Job Responsibilities:

  • Identify, cultivate and solicit individuals in support of Outfest’s mission.
  • Develop and execute an annual strategy for both new and renewing major donors, including expansion and diversification of the major donor roster.
  • Learn all aspects of the Outfest major donor program and the roster of current major donors. Develop relationships with and solicit funding from both current and prospective major donors.
  • Work with the Board of Directors to engage current and prospective major donors, including correspondence and in-person meetings with a focus on gifts of $1,350 + annually.
  • Have personal responsibility for a portfolio accounting for $200,000-$400,000 per year in sustainable annual revenue, with appropriate increases in each subsequent year.
  • Manage a membership/major donor program that brings in $800,000 annually (with plans to significantly grow this amount in the next few years).
  • Responsible for the planning and execution of major donor cultivation, solicitation and/or appreciation events.
  • Oversee the host committee and ticket sales goals for The Legacy Awards and other fundraising events. 
  • Design and implement fundraising campaigns, as well as strategic marketing and communication initiatives related to major donors.
  • Manage major donor database and correspondence.
  • Keep abreast of federal and state tax laws that may be relevant to major donor gift prospects.
  • Undertake other projects and duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of demonstrated success as a front-line fund-raiser, with increasing levels of responsibility and success, with an emphasis on individual major donors/gifts
  • Proven track record of well-honed skills in developing long-term donor cultivation and solicitation strategies
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience supervising and motivating senior-level volunteers
  • A commitment to Outfest’s mission as well as an understanding of its five programs and their role in the broader LGBT Movement
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; a high level of comfort with direct donor interaction, including discussions of personal and family finances
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, including attention to detail
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously and to succeed under pressure
  • Ability to be both engaging and professional when making presentations at events and meetings
  • Ability to work well with others and to exhibit strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong knowledge of Filmmaker Pro software, MS Office Suite applications and Internet and generally computer savvy

Representatives wanted to assist in daily box office operations for OUTFEST 2008.

Pre-Festival & Festival

Learn the OUTFEST ticketing procedures, ticketing system software, ticket printer system and phone system.
Sell tickets and memberships for OUTFEST 2008 via counter, phone and Internet.
Provide information to customers regarding OUTFEST 2008.
Keep up-to-date on any policy changes, sold-outs, etc.
Maintain pleasant disposition for coworkers and customers.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills, and Education

Excellent customer service skills required.
Excellent interpersonal communication.
Maturity in decision-making and communication.
Professional office and telephone etiquette.
Windows, Email, Internet and Word proficiency required. 
Experience using Tix/Sys Ticketing System would be helpful, but not required.
Cashier and Customer Service experience preferred.
Employee has legal authorization to work in the United States.

This job requires the ability to work independently and make decisions based on OUTFEST 2008 policy.  Must be able to think and act quickly under pressure, work within tight deadlines and be multi-task oriented.

Catering Coordinator

Outfest seeks a motivated and outgoing individual to solicit 30 new and returning restaurant sponsors for Outfest 2008.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Solicit and secure 25 restaurants for Opening Night Gala (July 9) to donate 500-1000 bites of food each.
  • Solicit and secure 14 restaurants to donate 1000 bites of food at 14 receptions at the Director's Guild of America.
  • Solicit and secure 4 restaurants for Closing Night Gala (July 21) with each donating 500-1000 bites of food each.
  • Make certain restaurants submit ads for Outfest catalog on time.
  • Maintain professional relationships with restaurants ensuring they have a positive experience.
  • Ensure restaurants' sponsor benefits are being met.
Terms of employment:
The job starts immediately and ends on July 21. This is a contract position. One will be asked to attend production meetings leading up to the festival at the Outfest offices. Compensation $2500.

Outfest 2008: The 26th Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival

LOS ANGELES COUNTY-SPONSORED INTERNSHIPS

Number of internships: 2
Hours per week: 40
Salary: $350/week
Length of internship: 10 weeks (May 27 – August 1)

All internships will be directly involved with the production activities of OUTFEST 2008: The 26th Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.  The festival will take place July 9-21, 2008 at the Directors Guild of America and other venues.  Outfest 2008 will screen more than 200 films and videos over thirteen days to an audience of more than 50,000. 

ELIGIBILITY:
To be eligible, final candidates must be college undergraduates and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2008 and will not graduate before December 2008.  Intern applicants must be a resident of or attend college in Los Angeles County.

Though previous experience with, or commitment to the visual arts is not required, undergraduates with an interest in film and video production or large event coordinating are encouraged to apply. Completion of all LA County Internship activities during the internships is required (see below).

Film Trafficking Assistant

This intern will assist in the vital area of film and video tracking, shipping, and trafficking for Outfest 2008.  Responsibilities involve contacting distribution companies, studios, filmmakers. Requires excellent organizational skills and follow-through ability. Must have own transportation.

Outreach Assistant

This intern will play a key role in helping to implement Outfest's marketing distribution plan by organizing online information distribution, outreaching to and organization of volunteers, working with representatives from collaborating community based organizations, and helping with participation in the annual LA LGBT Pride Parade and Festival. Requires excellent people and organizational skills and computer capability. Must have own transportation.

These internships are sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.  More than 130 undergraduate interns will participate in the program this year at performing, presenting, and literary nonprofit arts organizations and municipal arts agencies throughout LA County.  In addition to their full-time 10 week paid internship, interns will participate in four educational events as part of the program, which are funded by the Getty Foundation.  The educational events are designed to provide interns with a broader perspective of the vibrant arts and cultural landscape of the County.  For additional information on the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the Arts Internship Program, and for a complete list of all the internships offered this summer, visit the Arts Commission website at www.lacountyarts.org.
