7:30PM
DIR: Donna Deitch, 1986, USA, 35mm, 90 min.

Donna Deitch and noted critic B. Ruby Rich will join in an in-depth discussion about the inception, production and impact of this unparalleled classic of lesbian cinema. Still a stunning achievement of storytelling and romantic abandon, this adaptation of Jane Rule's novel DESERT OF THE HEART tells the story of Vivian (Helen Shaver), an uptight English professor visiting Reno for a divorce in 1959. When she meets free-spirited Cay (Patricia Charbonneau), a sculptress and casino worker, Vivian's orderly demeanor gives way to passion and a self-realization she never imagined. Join us for this unique screening and discussion as we celebrate this landmark among onscreen depictions of women in love.

7:30PM
DIR: Dustin Lance Black, 2001, USA, video, 101 min.

There are no road rules when seven young, attractive gay men hit the highway in a Winnebago to attend the Burning Man festival in Nevada. Salvaging footage commissioned by a now defunct Internet company, this documentary in the "reality programming" mode locates reality and drama in the close quarters its subjects share. Friendships and egos are tested by the presence of porn star Jason. The comical but perceptive insights of Damon, supposedly the only average-looking guy ("not some model") provide humor and depth. When sexual tensions develop, the sandstorm that smashes through their campsite becomes a metaphor for the friends' inner turmoil. A fascinating, often moving documentary, ON THE BUS strips bare sexual politics and emotional defenses, providing a unique picture of men together.

7:30PM
DIR: Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, 1985, Mexico, 35mm, subtitled, 90 min.

A hallmark in depictions of queer Latin America, this delightful Mexican feature launched Jaime Humberto Hermosillo as an internationally renowned director. One of the first Latin American films to deal positively with homosexuality, DONA HERLINDA is the story of a mother and son in Guadalajara. Shrewd and unflappable, Dona Herlinda loves her son Rodolfo, a surgeon, so much that she longs for him to live happily with her, and with some unknown future wife...and another man, if necessary. Sensing that Rodolfo's friendship with handsome Ramon is more than just friendship, she invites Ramon to stay over, observing that "Rodolfo has such a big bed." Compromises and revelations fill out this story about the struggle between self-determination and family love.

7:30PM
DIR: Arthur Hiller, USA, 1982, 35mm, 111 min.

In 1982, while still a fledgling program of the UCLA Film and Television Archive, the nascent Gay & Lesbian Media Coalition (later OUTFEST) presented the landmark film MAKING LOVE. At a time when a newly politicized gay and lesbian community was critical of Hollywood for both its representations of homosexuality and the dearth of such representations, screenwriter Barry Sandler and director Arthur Hiller made history by giving melodrama a modern twist. This story of an unhappy marriage focuses on a husband (Michael Ontkean) whose secret desires remain hidden from his wife (Kate Jackson) until he meets a swinging novelist (Harry Hamlin). In its 20th Anniversary year, OUTFEST is proud to collaborate on this special 20th Anniversary screening of MAKING LOVE, on the UCLA campus where it all began.

IN PERSON (schedules permitting): A. Scott Berg, Harry Hamlin, Arthur Hiller, Kate Jackson, Daniel Melnick, Barry Sandler and Mike Werb (moderator)

7:30PM
DIR: Christopher Münch, 1991, USA, 35mm, 60 min.

What if you could go back and peek at a hidden moment in history? A hit at our 1992 festival, Christopher Münch's feature dramatizes an event without witnesses: the legendary four-day Barcelona vacation Beatle John Lennon and gay Beatles manager Brian Epstein took in 1963, just before the Beatles rose to international fame. Long a topic of speculation for rock enthusiasts and inquiring minds, this encounter is dramatized with intensity and sensitivity, as the hopelessly straight future rock star and the man who fairly created him, negotiate the weekend and their future business and personal relationship. The result is an elaborate story involving sexual tension, unrequited passion and dreams of future glory. The film's gritty black-and-white cinematography recalls early images of the Beatles, and stellar performances by David Angus as Epstein and Ian Hart (BACKBEAT) as Lennon bring this compelling story brilliantly to life.

7:30PM (panel and reception)

In recent years, lesbian images in mass media have flourished and proliferated – thanks in no small part to television. Noteworthy lesbian feature films premiere on cable while significant lesbian roles in theatrical movies feature prominent TV actresses. As the independent film market becomes more fiercely competitive, and the small screen more and more gay friendly, is television becoming the saving grace of lesbian media culture? Are careers in television a better bet for women who want to make a difference in the onscreen depiction of lesbian lives? Join this spirited discussion with a panel of notable women who will explore the terrain, and the horizons, of television as a lesbian stronghold.

PRE-SCREENING RECEPTION HOSTED BY:

7:30PM
DIR: Lukas Moodysson, 1998, Sweden/Denmark, 35mm, subtitled, 89 min.

The glorious opening night film of OUTFEST '99 is a landmark in its depiction of lesbian love...among the Clearasil set! The story of two insufferably self-absorbed girls who find beauty in themselves and each other, this sharply observed drama is filled with humor, pain, romance and all the trappings of young love. Super-cool Elin is an explosive teen bombshell, bored crazy with her small-town life. Agnes is a new girl in town; moody, lonely and bitter, but with a colossal crush on Elin. When Elin kisses the unpopular Agnes on a bet, forces are set in motion that neither one knows how stop or deal with...leading to hilarious and touching results and an ultimately delectable outcome! Winner of the Teddy Award at the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival, SHOW ME LOVE is sure to delight, and to re-ignite memories of first love!

and

TINY AND RUBY – HELL DIVIN' WOMEN
DIR: Greta Schiller, 1988, USA, 16mm, 40 min.

Two delightful documentaries about notable women represent the talents of two essential lesbian filmmakers: Greta Schiller (PARIS WAS A WOMAN) and Andrea Weiss (ESCAPE TO LIFE). The International Sweethearts of Rhythm were the jazzy ladies of an industrious jazz band from the 1940s. The 16-member band is documented from its small-town Mississippi roots to later international tours, entertaining troops during World War II. TINY AND RUBY profiles two members of the band, trumpeter Ernestine "Tiny" Davis and drummer Ruby Lucas. Sharing a creative and loving relationship that spanned 40 years, the women are celebrated as inspiring lesbians who lived a rich but little-known life of love and creativity before Stonewall.

7:30PM
DIR: Todd Haynes, 1991, USA, 16mm, 85 min.

Todd Haynes' (SAFE, VELVET GOLDMINE) wickedly entertaining first feature established him as the great hope of the New Queer Cinema of the early ‘90s. In his audacious freshman outing, three separate stories combine to create a shattering look at sexual obsession, deviance and passion. A young boy escapes the clutches of his abusive father. An obsessive scientist bottles the human sex drive, but with dire consequences. Finally, a beautiful young man in prison falls in love with a fellow inmate and to his dread (and delight?) is caught in a spiral of desire and degradation. Wildly divergent in its story approaches, the film stands as a powerful and deceptively unified work of art --distilling the anger, anxiety and queer consciousness that came on the heels of AIDS and the Reagan era. POISON was reviled by conservatives and lauded as the queerest thing seen onscreen since the death of Fassbinder. Winner of the Jury Prize at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival, POISON was then premiered in Los Angeles by OUTFEST.

A FREE weekend event for family audiences!

A barrel of fun at the Village at Gould Plaza for kids and their parents. Games and goodies in the courtyard will be matched with a screening of two beloved kids' classics. First we screen the beautiful 1956 short film THE RED BALLOON, in which a boy’s magic balloon leads him around the streets of Paris, far from the shouts of other kids who don't understand the magic he possesses. This gorgeous and uplifting film celebrates the wonder of being different. THE SISSY DUCKLING, HBO's magnificent animated short featuring the voices of Harvey Fierstein, Sharon Stone and Ed Asner, tells the story of a little duck whose fey ways bring him ridicule, until he becomes a hero. A day designed to thrill parents and kids alike!

TIME OFF
DIR: Eytan Fox, 1990, Israel, video, subtitled, 45 min.

GOTTA HAVE HEART
DIR: Eytan Fox, 1997, Israel, video, subtitled, 37 min.

These entertaining works by one of Israel's top television directors paint a rarely-seen picture of modern gay life. Premiered at OUTFEST in 1992, TIME OFF is the first film to depict homosexuality in the Israeli army. On his way to the Lebanese front, young recruit Yonatan passes a few hours' leave in Jerusalem. In a cruisy park, he comes face to face with the man he'd least expect to find: his severe, ultra-masculine lieutenant. GOTTA HAVE HEART paints a whimsical picture of young love among the inhabitants of a small Israeli town. Guri is anxious to go to school in Tel Aviv before anyone learns that he's gay. Mitzi worries that she'll end up an old maid. Nohav dreams of winning a cheesy annual song contest. Even local stud Merito has a surprise up his sleeve. With sublime understatement, Fox describes this charming film as a "gay fantasy."

Free Admission with Golden Age of Hollywood drag!

7:30PM (6:30 pre-screening reception)
DIR: George Cukor, 1939, USA, 35mm, 131 min.

Adopted, co-opted and canonized by generations of gays and lesbians, gay director George Cukor's uproarious comedy of manners lights up the screen and camps up OUTFEST's 20th Anniversary, complete with beautiful gowns, wicked gossip, bitchy cat fights and no men. MGM's top female stars match talents and wits as a set of high-society back-stabbers who thrive on gossip and gold-digging. When sweet Mary Haines (Norma Shearer) gets wind of her husband's affair with trashy shop-girl Crystal (a formidable Joan Crawford), there's little she can do to keep her painful secret. No matter, because her friends (especially a manic Rosalind Russell) would be just as happy to slap Crystal as they are to whisper about Mary. Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine and Marjorie Main are just a few of the co-stars who round out this unmatched ensemble of actresses. Non-stop, sparkling dialogue, jaw-dropping costumes and unforgettable performances crown this unchallenged camp classic.
