Platinum

Our baby is all grown up and ready for the big time! Several years in the making, OUTFEST proudly unveils this new, ongoing section of the festival dedicated to showcasing the latest in experimental media.

Welcome to a world where creative innovation turns hotel resorts and silver screens into PLATINUM!

PLATINUM OASIS

For PLATINUM, the experiential wing of OUTFEST, we have taken on the task of curating an around-the-clock event featuring artists working in sound, surveillance, vaudeville and technical torture devices. Set in the "historic" Coral Sands Motel, PLATINUM OASIS is an 18-hour durational arts fest with 40 rooms of media, interactive and salon-style installations. Simultaneously, a poolside lounge manned by Davis and El Cholo will feature a torch-singing Ann Magnuson, spoken word assaults by Lydia Lunch, a burlesque review courtesy of The Velvet Hammer and much more. It's all about choices. You can enter Bruce La Bruce's live and projected photo sessions or take a load off and get your nails done in Divinity Fudge's Funky Nail Salon. See what pops out of Kembra Pfhaler's glory hole, The Concave Serviette, or sweat it out in the Love Hut Sauna. There will be play-changing rooms so come prepared with a bathing suit or clean underdrawers. After midnight, the tone switches down to the underwater world of Osseus Labyrint, a poetry slam, experimental classical muzak jam and "private" parties. Sunday morning, country folk band The Acres will close the marathon with a gospel baptismal service.
Blessed beaver,
Ron Athey and Dr. Vaginal Davis, Curators

HISTORY LESSONS

DIR: BARBARA HAMMER, 2000, USA, 16MM, 67 MIN.
Since the world dropped the ball in producing a pre-Stonewall lesbian history on film, veteran experimental filmmaker Barbara Hammer has courageously stepped in like a champ to give one to us by force. Gorgeous, shameless, and wonderfully playful, HISTORY LESSONS is an irreverent reconstruction of a filmic lesbian history that dates back to the 19th century. Sidestepping the conventional "voice of God" narration and experimenting with the historical documentary form, Hammer devilishly manipulates dramatically conceived episodes of lesbian life and revelry before 1969 with excavated newsreels, sports films, military promotionals, vintage stag reels and lesbian angst dramas. The result is a charming inscription of a lesbian identity upon every single woman depicted on the screen, including Eleanor Roosevelt herself! The viewer is rewarded with a delightful sense of an epic lesbian history on celluloid of which everyone can be proud.

THE MAULING OF NEW YORK: WORK FROM MIX NYC 2000 FESTIVAL

In spite of Rudy Giuliani's shockingly successful vengeance against the City of New York, turning the city into the world's largest suburban shopping mall, strange queer people - hidden in out of the way corners, fleeing to the suburbs, escaping to Canada after the evil deed is done - continue to make their work. It can pop up, like mushrooms in sidewalk cracks, almost anywhere you look.

GRAPHIC SEX AND VIOLENCE

O FANTASMA

DIR: JOAO PEDRO RODRIGUES, 2000,
PORTUGAL, 35MM, SUBTITLED, 90 MIN.
The promise shown by Joao Pedro Rodriguez in his 1997 short film, PARABENS, is explosively fulfilled in this stunning feature debut. A gorgeous, disturbing and surreal piece of erotic filmmaking, O FANTASMA's entrancing experimental narrative explores the insatiable sadomasochistic lust of Sergio, a Lisbon garbage collector who is consumed by a constant longing for anonymous sex with men. When he spots the man who becomes his ultimate object of sexual obsession, Sergio dons a black latex suit and stalks him with an uncontrollably brutal fervor. Remarkably, O FANTASMA is structured so that events from one scene do not, as in traditional narrative, inform the course of events in the next. Instead Rodriguez starts each scene anew, with Sergio embarking on a singular, separate sexual conquest. In doing so, Rodriguez deftly paints a portrait of Sergio's cyclical and obsessive desire and plunges the viewer in an unrelenting cascade of erotic waves.
