mission
The mission of OUTFEST is to build bridges among audiences, filmmakers
and the entertainment industry through the exhibition of high-quality
gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender themed films and videos, highlighted
by an annual festival, that enlighten, educate and entertain the diverse
communities of Southern California.
history
Founded in 1982, the first "Gay and Lesbian Media Festival and Conference"
was held in conjunction with the UCLA Film and Television Archives. In
1994 the name of the festival was changed to OUTFEST, more accurately
reflecting the dynamic changes that had happened to the gay and lesbian
media arts community and our recognition of the changing needs of gay
and lesbian filmmakers and audiences. By 1998 OUTFEST had become the largest
film festival in Southern California. In 1999, OUTFEST inaugurated a weekly
screening series in collaboration with the LA Gay and Lesbian Center at
their Village at Ed Gould Plaza in Hollywood. OUTFEST @ The Village is
the only weekly gay-themed screening series in the world.
